Middle School Sports Report: Ellerbe baseball and soccer collect wins; Rockets baseball looking to remain undefeated

RICHMOND COUNTY – In this week’s middle school sports report, several local teams improved with wins in their respective sports.

ELLERBE BASEBALL NOTCHES FIRST WIN

ELLERBE – The Ellerbe Middle School baseball team picked up its first win of the season Monday after struggling to find its footing in the early going. Facing off against East Hoke Middle School at home, the Wildcats trailed by seven runs in the first inning before mounting a huge comeback win, 11-10.

Starting eighth-grade pitcher Dexter Mabe struggled in the early innings against the Golden Eagles, but seventh grader Brycen Goodwin came on in relief to pick up the win, shutting East Hoke down in the final innings.

Ryan White (eight grade) led EMS with three hits on the afternoon, while Thomas Lampley (seventh grade) added two more for the Wildcats.  Mabe, Vance Goodwin (sixth grade) and Yanistan Locklear (eighth grade) each slapped a hit, with Locklear’s being the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring pinch-runner Jamerius McRae.  The Cats are now 1-5 on the season, and will travel to Carver Middle School in Scotland County on Thursday.

EMS BOYS AND GIRLS SOCCER CONTINUES WINNING WAYS

CORDOVA – Out of spring break, both of EMS’ soccer teams have compiled multiple wins. In Tuesday’s action, the Wildcats traveled to in-county rival Cordova Middle School and swept the Cavaliers

In the Lady Wildcats’ game, the visiting team ran away on the scoreboard, as EMS defeated Cordova 6-0. Improving to 5-1 on the season, with their only loss coming to Rockingham Middle School, the Lady Wildcats have relied on eighth grader Sheila Martinez, who blasted a hat trick. Through six games this year, Martinez has scored a team-best eight goals. Also scoring for EMS was sixth-grader Melissa Morales (two goals) and seventh-grader Juiliana Gonzalez.

In the boys game, it was a much more contested affair, as the Wildcats won by a final score of 2-0. A goal by eight-grader Duglas Recinos and fellow eighth-grader Rolando Contreras was enough to secure the win, while Tyreese Collins kept the Cavs off the board by not allowing a goal. The boys are now 3-2-1 on the season.

ROCKINGHAM BASEBALL REMAINS UNDEFEATED AS IT PREPARES TO FACE UNDEFEATED CARVER MIDDLE SCHOOL

ROCKINGHAM – Following Monday’s 9-2 victory over Anson Middle School Blue, the Rockingham Rockets remained perfect on the season with a 6-0 record. But all of those wins won’t mean anything unless the Rockets can soar past also undefeated Carver Middle School on Wednesday.

In what head coach Jamie McDonald called the battle “for first place in the conference,” the Rockets will look to remain hot on the mound and at the dish. In the win over Anson Blue, Cameron Seagraves earned the win, while Ethan Clayton went 2-for-2 at the plate.

Other Rockets to collect a hit were Matthew Walker (1-for2), Jude Howard and James Eason (both 1-for-3) and Will Dawkins (1-for-4). The Rockets will look to clip the wings of the Carver Eagles, as first pitch is set for Wednesday at 4 p.m.
