Middle School Sports Report: Hamlet Girls Volleyball Defeats Ellerbe 2-0, 2-1

HAMLET — The Hamlet Lady Red RamsĀ  volleyball team defeated fellow Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference opponent Ellerbe in both matches of a doubleheader Tuesday. The Lady Red Rams the first match 2-0, and took the second match 2-1.

Ā

While the first match was dominated by Hamlet, head coach Alex Gardner noticed her girls seemed more timidĀ during the second match. Still getting the win, Gardner felt that the timidness causedĀ  her players to fall short in the first set.

Ā

After dropping the first game, Hamlet kicked its game up a notch and looked like the same team from the first match, winning the next two sets to take the second match.

Ā

Seventh grader Quston Leviner led the team with 15 aces and two kills. EighthĀ graders Kiersten Gibson and Erial Norton, along with sixthĀ grader Katie Way, also made big appearances for the Red Rams. GibsonĀ notchedĀ 10 aces, NortonĀ added nine more, with Way finishing with six aces and one kill.

Ā

ā€œI am proud of the girls and their performance overall,” said Gardner. “There are definitely things we need to work on, like calling the ball and being more consistent with our serves. But we were aggressive when going for the ball. I have a lot of new players on the team this year, and I am excited to see how much they grow over the season.ā€

The Red Rams are back in action Thursday, as they’ll play Cordova Middle School 4 p.m. Ellerbe willĀ also go on the road in-county and face Rockingham Middle School Thursday at 4 p.m.
