Middle School Sports Report: Rockingham and Ellerbe volleyball notch wins

RICHMOND COUNTY – Richmond County Schools’ four middle schools began Week 2 of Southeastern Athletic Conference play this week.

Lady Rocket volleyball splits with Anson Blue

WADESBORO – Fresh off of their two doubleheader wins over Ellerbe and rival Hamlet middle schools last week, the Rockingham Middle School volleyball team lost its first match of the season as it split Monday’s two matches with Anson Middle School Blue.

The first match of the doubleheader on the road for the Lady Rockets went to Anson Blue with set scores of 20-25 and 24-26. Rockingham rebounded in the second match, winning in straight sets by scores of 25-10 and 25-21.

Leading the way for veteran head coach Teresa Mason’s team was eighth grader Edriana Davis, who tallied 23 points on the afternoon. Fellow eighth graders Catherine Dennis (21 points) and Joy Styles (15 points) were the second and third point scorers, respectively.

Also helping win the second match were Keyoni Nichols’ 13 points, along with 12 points from Allie Rodgers. Rounding out the Lady Rockets’ scoring were Kenleigh Locklear (six points), Jamiya Lindsey (three points) and Karter Walker (one point). Rockingham will return home Thursday to face Cordova Middle School at 4 p.m.

Ellerbe volleyball nabs first win of 2018 season

CORDOVA – After starting the season by dropping its first four matches, the Lady Wildcat volleyball team made the short trip to in-county rival Cordova Middle School Monday, where second-year head coach Kristin Svitak’s team earned its first match win of the 2018 campaign.

Ellerbe would allow the Lady Cavaliers to take the first match of the double-header in straight sets 21-25 and 23-25. But resilient were the Lady Wildcats, as they battled back to win the second match, going the full three sets, with scores of 25-21, 22-25 and 15-13. Ellerbe is now 1-5 on the season.

Rocket golf team takes match at Bayonet Golf Course

RAEFORD – Back in action for the second Monday in a row after Hurricane Florence delayed the start of the middle school golf season were several of Richmond County’s middle school co-ed teams. Hosted by Hoke County at Bayonet Golf Course at Puppy Creek in Raeford, it was the Rockingham Rockets team that emerged victorious for the second time in as many matches.

Playing nine holes of golf, Ellerbe finished the afternoon in fourth place. Leading the team was eighth grader Bryce Goodwin, who posted a score of 49. Rounding out Ellerbe’s scorecard were Mason Murray (54), Lane Richardson (60) Gavin Applewhite (61), Garett Mabe (63) and Natalie Meacham (72).
