RICHMOND COUNTY — In middle school sports action on Wednesday, the Rockingham Middle School soccer teams swept Anson Middle School, while the Ellerbe Middle School baseball and softball teams split with Cordova Middle School.

Rockets, Lady Rockets continue good start

The Rockingham boys’ and girls’ soccer teams hosted Anson Middle School, the two teams’ second game of the season. Both improved to 2-0 on the season, following up season-opening wins against Carver Middle School on Monday.

In the Lady Rockets’ game, a hat trick by seventh grader Gabby Lutz helped Rockingham to its second-straight 6-0 win. It marked the first three goals of Lutz’s season, while three of her teammates also found the back of the net.

Scoring her third goal of the season was eighth grader Karter Walker, who had two against Carver. Beating the keeper for the first time this season were eighth graders Andrea Ellerbe and C’Nedra Hinson.

Walker added two assists in the win, while Ellerbe, Allie Rodgers and Jennifer Gomez each each contributed on a goal.

Following the girls’ shutout win, the Rockets used four different goal scorers to also blank the Bearcats 4-0. Notching his team-leading second goal of the season was eighth grader Chris Lopez, who was a part of Monday’s 3-0 win over Carver.

A trio of Lopez’s teammates found the twine for the first time this spring. Eighth graders Ty Murray and Aiden Mabe, along with seventh grader Jeremiah Ritter, added goals in the Rockets’ win.

Both Rockingham teams will return to the pitch on Monday when they travel to Cordova Middle School. The girls will play at 4 p.m., followed by the boys.

Ellerbe baseball earns first win, Cordova softball edges Lady Wildcats

The Ellerbe Middle School baseball team headed to its cross-county rival Cordova Middle School on Wednesday and earned a 19-4 victory. It marked the Wildcats’ first win of the spring, after falling to Rockingham earlier in the week.

Getting the start on the hill for Allen Adeimy’s squad was eighth grader Brycen Goodwin, as he also collected a hit in the win. Cordova’s pitching struggled to throw strikes, but Brent Hayes was able to connect for two hits on the afternoon, a team high.

Other Wildcats to reach base safely via a hit were Thomas Lampley and Vance Goodwin. Cordova’s batters had some success at the plate as well, with Jabori Hester blasting a solo home run for the Cavaliers. Teammate Messiah Shaw recorded a double.

On the softball field, it was the Lady Cavaliers who emerged with a 13-12 victory over the Lady WIldcats. Ellerbe’s Caroline Hunsucker led her team with three hits, while teammates Katelyn Cagle and Candra Butler knocked singles.

The Ellerbe baseball team improved to 1-1 on the spring, while the Lady Wildcats fell to 0-2. Ellerbe will host Hamlet Middle School on Monday at 4 p.m.
