LAURINBURG — Richmond Senior High School’s boys’ golf team began its new season at Scotch Meadows on Monday.

Using five golfers to compete against five other Sandhills Athletic Conference teams, the Raiders combined their top four scorers and tallied a team score of 206.

That finish put the Raiders in sixth place, just nine strokes behind Hoke County High School (197).

Richmond and the other schools played the front nine of the course and double-par was the max score per hole.

Senior Chandler Orr, who made his golfing debut for the Raiders, posted the team’s lowest score during the opener. He shot a 43, which was three shots better than junior teammate Ayden Mabe (46).

The other two qualifying scores for Richmond were from seniors Ethan Brown (52) and David O’Neal (65). Junior Lane Richardson also participated in the match, posting a score of 66.

“I am very impressed with Chandler’s score, which he said was his best,” head coach Keith Parsons said. “To do that in his first golf match, on a course he had not seen in a couple of years, is great.

“Ayden got off to a great start and brought home a solid score, as well. I expect Ethan, David and Lane to improve on their efforts; each of them have played well in practices.”

Pinecrest High School won the first match of the season with a team score of 145, led by a match-low score of 34 from Carson Bertagnole.

Other finishing scores were Union Pines (187), Lee County (192) and Scotland (193). Southern Lee did not compete.

Richmond earned two points in the SAC standings following its sixth-place finish.

The Raiders will return to action next Monday in their lone home match of the season at Foxfire. Golfers will tee off starting at 3 p.m. for the nine-hole match.
