CAMERON — Saturday’s indoor track and field meet wasn’t a high-scoring affair for the Richmond Raiders, but one jumper qualified for the state championship meet.
Competing in the Viking Polar Bear meet at Union Pines High School, the Raiders finished ninth of 13 teams with 14.5 points.
Sophomore long jumper Keonta Pegues accounted for 10 points with a new personal record performance.
All of Richmond’s points came in jumping events. Sophomore Chamaure Shaw added three points in the triple jump and freshman Jeremy Lindsey had 1.5 points
Pegues won the long jump and qualified for the NCHSAA state championship meet next month. He set a new PR with a distance of 21 feet, 10 inches, which was 10 inches more than he needed to qualify.
Shaw took sixth overall in the triple jump for his three points. He landed at a final mark of 38 feet, 3.5 inches.
Lindsey, a high jumper, finished tied for seventh place. He cleared the bar at 5 feet even.
Saturday’s meet was the final regular-season event for the Raiders. Head coach John Rich said Pegues may compete in a few meets prior to the NCHSAA state championship Feb. 10.
