Pegues, Shaw guide Raiders to 3rd place finish at Polar Bear meet

SOUTHERN PINES — Competing at Pinecrest High School on Friday, the Richmond boys’ indoor track and field team placed third overall.

The Raiders collected 73 points in the second Polar Bear meet of the season hosted by the Patriots. 

Pinecrest won the meet with 261 points, followed by Union Pines High School (90 points). Also competing were Douglas Byrd (35 points), Cape Fear (24) and Western Harnett (11 points) high schools.

The bulk of Richmond’s points came in relays (26 points) and jumps (25 points). They added 14 points in sprints and eight points in throws.

Helping the Raiders take first place in the 4×200-meter relay were Travion Smith, Demetrius Everette, Deshaun Ingram and Keonta Pegues. The four runners earned 10 points with a time of 1:32.63, which was 2.47 seconds faster than Pinecrest.

Richmond’s 4×400-meter (3:59.84) and 4×800-meter relay teams (11:06.50) both took second place and notched eight points apiece.

Pegues and Chamaure Shaw paired up to record all of Richmond’s points in three jumping events.

Winning the long jump, Pegues launched out to a first-place distance of 19 feet, 0.5 inches for 10 more points. Shaw was fourth in the event, adding five points with a jump of 18 feet, 6.5 inches.

Also competing in the high jump and triple jump, Shaw combined for 10 more points. He placed third in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches) and claimed fifth in the triple jump (35 feet, 2 inches).

All of Richmond’s points in sprints were earned by Pegues and Ingram. 

Getting his first victory of the season in the 55-meter dash, Pegues ran to a time of 6.72 seconds for 10 more points. That was 0.04 seconds faster than Union Pines’ Roger Patterson.

Ingram was fifth in the 55-meter dash, adding four points with a new personal record time of 6.98 seconds.

Smith closed out the team’s scoring with a second-place mark in the shot put. Also setting a new PR, his longest throw was 34 feet, 8 inches.

The Raiders’ next meet will be Saturday, Jan. 6, at Union Pines High School. Events will begin at 10 a.m.
