ROCKINGHAM — The majority of the new Richmond Senior High School practice soccer field came together in just under four hours on Saturday.

Nearly 50 volunteers helped unload three dozen pallets of sod on the 40×50-yard field, turning a field of topsoil into a soon-to-be usable soccer pitch.

Spearheading the project was head coach Chris Larsen, along with former head coach Bennie Howard. The two have planned and saved the program’s money for several years to make the new addition a reality.

“We had a really good turnout today and I’m really grateful for everyone’s help,” Larsen said. “There was a lot of support from current players, students, community members and even players who played for Coach Howard 15 or 20 years ago.

“It really got done a lot faster than I thought it would and I’m happy that this big step is completed,” he added. “I know our players are ready to get on (the field) and use it to help grow our program.”

The next step, Larsen said, is to water the field and maintain it over the next couple of weeks to ensure the sod grows properly.

He anticipates it will be ready to use by the end of the summer leading up to the fall season for the high school boys’ team.
