HAMLET — A five-run deficit wasn’t too much for the Hamlet American Legion baseball team to overcome on Tuesday.
Battling its way to a 10-8 victory, Post 49 defeated Matthews Post 235 at Memorial Park.
Tristan Hunt had a solo homer and a three-RBI triple, which proved to score the winning runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Teammate Markey Purvis also hit a solo shot, going back-to-back with Hunt in the third inning to start the rally.
Hamlet scored three runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to outscore Matthews 7-2 in the final four innings.
Also helping cut the deficit in the fourth was Hunter Huneycutt’s two-RBI single to center. Ashton Phifer, who scored on the hit, collected a team-high three hits, including two doubles.
Eythan Reynolds (3 innings) and J.D. Scarbrough (2 innings) pitched for Hamlet, and it was Matthew Miller (2 innings) who earned the win in relief.
Scarbrough tied the game 7-7 when he hit a pop fly single to shallow center field with the bases loaded.
