HAMLET — The Post 49 baseball team had the tying run 90 feet away during Sunday’s second billing of a doubleheader.
Hosting the inaugural George Whitfield Sunday Showdown, the Hamlet American Legion baseball team suffered its first loss to Garner Nationals Post 116 by a final score of 3-2.
Despite a complete game from James Eason, Hamlet couldn’t score the tying run with two outs in the seventh. Eason finished the night with a line of three earned runs on eight hits with two Ks.
Post 49 broke into the hit and scoring columns in the fifth. Evan Hodges recorded the team’s first hit and later scored on an RBI infield single by Landon Taylor.
In the seventh, Taylor recorded his second RBI when he struck out swinging. On the throw to first to record the out, Riley Brown (walk) scored.
Garner, which won the state championship last season, scored all three of its runs in the third inning.
