ROCKINGHAM — Nearly 200 kids hit the practice fields at Richmond Senior High School early Saturday for Dannell Ellerbe’s annual football camp.
This was the first year the free FUNdamentals camp, sponsored by USA Football, has been put on since 2019, having run for eight years prior.
Ellerbe has won two Super Bowl rings — the first with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013, and the second with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017. He also played with the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins.
According to Ellerbe’s wife, Shervella, who helps with the planning, there were 184 campers learning the basics of the game this year.
A team of coaches ran the campers through drills focused on footwork, speed, agility, throwing, catching and tackling.
Helping out was fellow Richmond County native and NFL linebacker Melvin Ingram and other former pro players Kade Weston, Lee Robinson, Ladarius Webb and Jonathan Freeny.
Additional coaches included Joshua Ellerbe, Lee Turner, Greg Betterson, Syvelle Newton, Keleen Stanback, Rashod Rush, Alex Coulthard, Quan Ellerbe, Justin Morman, Mitch Williamson, Garrett Hall, Nate Crosby, Taivon Jones, Steve Houston, Eugene Flowers, Joey English, Sammy Houston and Terry Harris.
