ROCKINGHAM — On a night that was history in the making, six senior players were also recognized for the Lady Raider basketball team.

Shortly after Richmond’s 59-38 victory over Scotland High School to claim the regular-season Sandhills Athletic Conference championship, this year’s soon-to-be graduates were recognized during senior night.

This year’s seniors, in alphabetical order, were —  Jamia Crowder, C’Niya Hinson, MaKailah Jackson, Ryelan Lyerly, Ciara Marshall and Yasmeen McLaughlin. Also honored was senior scorekeeper Tasha Johnson.

The team’s victory, its 13th in a row, marked the seventh time in the program’s history that the Lady Raiders finished its conference slate undefeated.

The most recent was the 2021-22 season, also under the direction of head coach Teddy Moseley. The others were the 2010-11, 1998-99, 1997-98, 1983-84 and 1972-73 squads.

Shortly after locking in the No. 1 seed heading into the SAC championship tournament, the six senior players and scorekeeper were introduced and escorted by family members and teammates to half court.

Moseley, along with the coaching staff, presented each player with a poster of her playing, as well as a goody basket and a yellow rose.

“They have been part of a special group,” Moseley said. “Their contributions have been a vital part to our success this season.

“Last year was a tough on for us, so it’s good for them to have the opportunity to go out as conference champions.”

The Richmond Observer will publish results from Friday’s SAC title-clinching win soon, along with photos of the boys’ basketball team’s seniors and a game story.
