ROCKINGHAM — A busy week of tennis got underway Monday at Richmond Senior High School.

Joining the action of other falls sports teams around campus, the Lady Raider tennis team held its first day of tryouts.

Richmond will be led again this season by head coach Jessica Covington, who returns for her fourth season. A total of 10 student-athletes attended Monday’s session.

Covington led the hour-long tryout by focusing on the sport’s fundamentals and basic terminology. Players then worked through a series of condition and ball control drills before practicing forehand shots and serves.

Tryouts will continue Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the tryouts will be moved indoors.

Also beginning Monday was the program’s inaugural tennis camp. Led by award-winning tennis instructor Tom Sweitzer, the camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon through Wednesday.

The Richmond Observer will publish a season preview, complete with a schedule and video interviews, in the coming weeks.
