ROCKINGHAM — The newly renovated tennis courts at Richmond Senior High School held its first tryout of the fall season on Thursday.

Playing on the courts now painted kelly green and lined in gold, hopeful members of the Lady Raider tennis team were in action with head coach Jessica Covington.

Back for her fourth season at the helm of the program, Covington said she was pleased with the turnout and the talent.

Ten girls showed up to the first day of tryouts, with Friday and Monday also set for two more days of competition before the final roster is posted.

Covington led a series of drills that worked on agility, footwork, forehand and backhand shots, and small-sided games focused on racket and ball control.

The Lady Raiders’ tennis season will start on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

The Richmond Observer will publish a season preview, complete with a schedule and video interviews, in the coming weeks.
