ROCKINGHAM — Tires were smoking on the infield road course of Rockingham Speedway July 27-28 during MB Drift’s inaugural summer matsuri: Summer Vibes.

Nearly 100 drivers came from across the Carolinas to drift along the recently repaved track, which featured several technical layouts throughout the weekend. Some drivers also made laps of the banked corners at the Little Rock track.

“The word about how good the paving is had really gotten out,” said MB Drift co-founder Marshall Eggerling.

Prior to the repave, drivers could only make a few laps before having to change tires. Now, a set of tires will last an entire day of drifting.

The two-day event featured sunset and night drifting and a Hawaiian shirt contest, won by Olivia Walsh.

MB Drift returns to the Rock Aug. 24-25 for the third and fourth competitive rounds of the season.

Belarusian native Anton Shenderov currently leads in points, after winning the first round and placing third in Round 2. Jake Little and Gray Champion, who respectively placed second and third in the first round, are tied with 126 points each.

Although they have yet to make the podium, Derick Gaskins and Nathan McDuffie are tied with 112 points, followed by Round 2 winner Paul Smith with 100 points. Frank Evans, Tyler Williams, Jeremy Coble, Andy Wright and Dan Stoneburner are tied at 98 points.

The 2024 season ends with Halloween Havoc the weekend of Oct. 19-20. Eggerling said more than 100 drivers are expected to attend that event.

Free ride-alongs are available for spectators 18 and older during non-competition runs.
