ROCKINGHAM — Local middle school student-athletes got a chance to compete on Richmond Senior High School’s facilities before the start of the new season.

Monday night featured two spring sports jamborees held by the Raider athletic department.

Mike Way, in his first school year as Richmond’s athletic director, started the first-of-its-kind initiative in the fall to better incorporate Richmond County’s middle schools with Raider Nation athletics.

This school year, several other preseason jamborees for football, volleyball and basketball have been held at Richmond with much success and community support.

Kicking off the preseason were the Ellerbe, Cordova, Hamlet and Rockingham softball teams and each school’s boys and girls soccer teams.

Thursday’s baseball jamboree, set to feature Ellerbe, Hamlet and Rockingham, was originally scheduled to be held at Richmond.

But due to the rescheduling of the Raider baseball team’s game against Sun Valley High School, the middle school event was moved to Rockingham Middle School.

It will start at 3:30 p.m. and cost $5 per person.

Below are photos of Monday’s jamborees, taken by co-publisher Charlie Melvin.
