LAURINBURG — Returning to its old stomping grounds, the Richmond Senior High School swimming program made a splash in its season opener Wednesday.

The Raiders and Lady Raiders, coached by first-year head coaches Ashleigh Buie and Lauren Brewer, competed in their first Sandhills Athletic Conference meet of the season.

Richmond, along with the SAC’s other six schools, swam at St. Andrews University after a year at another venue.

Richmond’s swimmers participated in several events, including the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyles, the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard open relays.

Swimming in finals heats were Sulleigh Bruce and Nelly Cadena (200-yard freestyle), Victor Nguyen and DJ Gainey (200-yard freestyle), Lilly Stubbs and Jamison Hubbard (50-yard freestyle), Erik Reichert, Cole Thrower and Matthew Leggett (50-yard freestyle).

A host of swimmers for each team swam in the 200-yard relays.

The swim teams are off until Wednesday, Dec. 4. That SAC match will be held in Laurinburg and start at 6 p.m.

The Richmond Observer will publish recapping both of Richmond’s performances once final results are released.
