ROCKINGHAM — Six turnovers on defense and another strong first half by the Richmond Raider football team made Friday’s first-round playoff game an easy win over Jack Britt.

The No. 1 Raiders used career performances from senior quarterback Kellan Hood and senior wide receiver Cason Douglas to cruise past the No. 32 Buccaneers 52-14.

Scoring on their first five offensive drives, coupled with three interceptions and three fumble recoveries, the Raiders advanced to the second round of the 4A East playoffs.

Hood threw for a career-high 275 passing yards and also set a new personal best with 4 passing scores. Douglas, who caught a single-game career-high two touchdown passes, also had a new record of 142 receiving yards on six catches.

Getting the scoring started was senior running back Nasir Crumpton on a 5-yard rush during the team’s first drive. Following that, sophomore linebacker Marquan Martin intercepted a pass to set up a 24-yard passing play from Hood to Douglas.

Senior linebacker Mikey Baldwin scooped up the first of his two fumble recoveries in the game on the next defensive series, allowing Hood to score a rushing touchdown from 20 yards. Hood had five total touchdowns in the game, making it two games in a row with that many.

Adding to the lead was a 43-yard catch and run by senior wide receiver Chris Ellerbe to open the second quarter, and senior defensive end J.D. Lampley picked up a fumble to give the Raiders another short field on offense.

Junior running back Taye Spencer scored on the ensuing drive, a 13-yard run. Before the half would end, senior wide receiver Trey Thomas caught a 10-yard score from Hood, and senior kicker Alex Medina split the uprights on a 30-yard field goal as time expired.

The field goal was set up by Baldwin’s second fumble recovery, and Richmond held a 45-7 lead at the break.

Toward the end of the third quarter, a 76-yard catch and run by Douglas out of the left flat led to the Raiders’ final score and started the running clock.

Adding interceptions in the game were senior linebacker Gabe Altman and sophomore defensive back Rashaad Gilbert.

Richmond (10-1) will face a tougher opponent in No. 16 Leesville Road High School (8-2) during the second round of the playoffs this Friday. The Pride defeated No. 17 Holly Springs 27-13 in the opening round.
