ROCKINGHAM — Cooler temperatures prevailed Monday evening, giving the Richmond Senior High School cross country teams a chance to beat the heat.

The Raider and Lady Raider teams held their first preseason workout of the summer at Hinson Lake.

With the start of their training, they joined the football, soccer and volleyball teams in getting to work on the first official day of the fall sports season.

Back this season are second-year coaches Ashleigh Buie and Morgan Tedder, both of whom split the duties with the boys’ and girls’ teams.

A total of 13 runners participated on Monday, with more expected to join throughout the week.

Runners ran close to two miles around the grounds of the lake in what Buie and Tedder called a “light warm up” to get the season going.

The Richmond Observer will publish a season preview, complete with a schedule and video interviews, in the coming weeks.
