ROCKINGHAM — The final day of Richmond Senior High School’s basketball camp ended with a lot of scrimmaging, points scored and smiles on Thursday.

Held for the first time during the tenure of head coaches Teddy Moseley and Donald Pettigrew, close to 80 campers participated in the four-day development camp.

Over the first three days, local youth players ages 6-15 broke into age groups and worked on building their skills and developing a stronger understanding of the game.

Throughout the week, with the help of Richmond’s coaching staff and several Raider and Lady Raider players, campers learned about basic fundamentals.

Sessions focused on passing, shooting, rebounding, free throws, boxing out, ball handling, how to set and read screens and how to run set plays on offense and defense.

“Basketball is starting to grow in Richmond County and we’re trying to continue that,” Moseley said. “It’s been a great week and camp has been well received. The kids come in wide open and leave tired, which is a good thing.

“The kids have been excellent and attentive,” he added. “Every day after camp we ask them to tell us one thing they learned. And I’ve had kids out in the community come up and share what they’ve learned and enjoyed most.”

Aside from Moseley and Pettigrew running camp, assistant coaches like Frank Harrington, Kenta Hutchinson, Shannon Jackson and Tanieka Reader were on hand to help with instruction. Former player P.J. McLaughlin also attended.

The biggest stars of the camp were Richmond’s players who helped with stations and then coached teams during Thursday’s tournament.

Among those were Paul McNeil Jr., Jullien Cole, Javian Drake, Jayden Hamilton, Braylon Barfield, Jamyia Lindsey, Makailah and Madisen Jackson, Ryelan Lyerly, C’Niya Hinson and J’Nasia Neal.

McNeil Jr.’s team, the Denver Nuggets, won the older-aged bracket championship. The N.C. State commit took to social media to share his experience and some photos from the week.

“This week was all about trying to build memories, just like we do with our teams” Pettigrew shared. “The kids got to hang out and interact with our players and that’s really special. There was a lot of love this week and all the kids had fun and learned a lot in the process.

“It’s wonderful for our players and former players to come out and give back,” he closed. “That’s what it’s all about. This teaches them how to coach and interact with kids. It’s been an enjoyable week and I’m proud of our programs coming together.”
