ROCKINGHAM — The second portion of the Richmond Senior High School summer basketball camp also wrapped up Thursday.

Following their younger counterparts, over 40 middle schoolers participated in the third and final day of camp, which was hosted by the Raider and Lady Raider basketball teams.

Back for its second summer under the direction of head coaches Teddy Moseley (Lady Raiders) and Donald Pettigrew (Raiders), the development camp was aimed at helping shape the future of the high school programs and build the sport’s interest in the community.

Helping out during the week were Frank Harrington and Whitney Smith. A host of current players — rising junior J’Nasia Neal and rising sophomores Josiah Brewington, BJ Hinson, Madisen Jackson and Kaniah Little — served as instructors.

Returning to his old stomping grounds, recent graduate and three-year varsity starter Javian Drake joined the fun and helped officiate scrimmages.

During Thursday’s final day of camp, players competed in team relay races and scrimmages. Moseley said the goal was for campers to apply their new skills and enjoy the experience.

“Camp has gone really well and we had another great turnout this year,” Moseley said. “The kids have learned a lot and they’ve worked hard. The thing that has impressed me the most this summer is their attitudes have gotten better.

“We wanted to improve their basketball IQ,” he added. “We really focused on the fundamentals of the sport — passing, shooting, dribbling and communication. We have a lot of athletes and we tried to teach them how to play the game the right way.”
