ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School cross country program recognized its five senior runners on Tuesday.

Hosting their lone home meet of the season, the Raiders and Lady Raiders welcomed Pinecrest and Scotland high schools for a 3.2-mile race at Hinson Lake.

Prior to the first starting gun, this year’s seniors and members of their families and teammates were introduced by co-head coaches Ashleigh Buie and Morgan Tedder.

Four-year runners included Kaleigh Cloninger and Cain Hunsucker, with Toby McInnis celebrating his third year with the team.

First-year runners were Ashley Canas and Zaviar Lowry. A short bio of each runner was read, including their plans for after graduation.

“It’s a bittersweet moment,” Buie said. “We enjoy celebrating our seniors, but at the same time they’ve had such an impact on the team and the program. Some of them have run more than the two years with Coach Tedder and myself as coaches.

“It’s sad to know that they’ll be leaving,” she added. “It’s exciting but we’ll be losing that leadership and all the fun that goes with this group of seniors. We hate to see them go but are excited for what they’ll do in the future.”

The Richmond Observer will publish results from Tuesday’s meet when they are made available.
