ROCKINGHAM — Race fans had the opportunity to take a few laps around the iconic Rockingham Speedway on Saturday thanks to the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience.

Eighty participants of varying skill levels took turns either behind the wheel or on the passenger side of a stock car to round the recently repaved mile-long oval.

The Rock is one of four tracks in North Carolina visited by the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience, with the others being Charlotte Motor Speedway, Caraway Speedway and Wake County Speedway.

The company boasts a total of 48 experiences at tracks in more than 20 states.

Members of the Hamlet Fire Department, who were there for safety precautions, helped participants get settled in the cars on pit road.

Wallace himself was at the Rock in February as part of the kickoff for the Moonshine and Motorsports Trail.

The NASCAR Hall of Famer said Rockingham was one of his favorite tracks.

Wallace holds the track lap record at 23.167 seconds and had five Cup Series wins at the Rock, including three consecutive (both races in ‘93 and February of ‘94). The only other former cup driver with three in a row is Richard Petty.
