SOUTHERN PINES — Head coach Patrick Hope said the junior varsity Richmond Raider football team could still accomplish its season goals by starting with a win to open Sandhills Athletic Conference play.
The JV Raiders took a step in that direction on Thursday, using a high-scoring first half to put away Pinecrest High School 27-0. Richmond scored 21 points in the second quarter.
After starting the season with three straight losses, the JV Raiders have won each of their last two games by a combined score of 61-6.
Richmond’s defense set the tone of the game early by intercepting a pass on Pinecrest’s opening drive, courtesy of sophomore defensive back Jamison Jones.
The JV Raiders’ offense found the end zone for the first time on a one-yard run from freshman Joesiya Cole, who had two scores in last week’s win against Overhills. The point after attempt was no good but Richmond held a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.
Kickstarting the difference-making second quarter was a one-yard rushing score from sophomore Isaiah Lockhart, who also scored one touchdown last week. Freshman kicker Billy West added the PAT to make it a 13-0 advantage.
The JV Raiders’ special teams unit set up the next score when sophomore Lareese Swinnie blocked a punt.
That allowed freshman quarterback Dillon Veach to connect with sophomore wide receiver Tristian Wall for a 42-yard touchdown pass. Another West PAT put the Raiders ahead 20-0.
Capping the game’s scoring before the halftime buzzer was a one-yard rushing touchdown by freshman tailback Javion Smith. West secured the final point by splitting the uprights.
“This was a great statement win to start our second season, which is conference play,” Hope said. “It was also our first time on the road this season.
“The defense forced several negative plays, and played very physical to earn its first shutout of the season,” he added. “The offense sustained drives with a solid run game and timely passes.”
Hope also noted that over 60 players saw playing time, which was a “great reward for kids who have worked hard all season.”
The JV Raiders (2-3, 1-0 SAC) will return home next Thursday for another SAC game against Hoke County High School. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
