ROCKINGHAM — Richmond Senior High School’s varsity basketball teams will now play their next game a day earlier than originally scheduled.
Rob Ransom, the school’s athletic director, announced on Wednesday that Richmond’s road games at Southern Lee High School have been moved to Thursday.
Citing the potential for winter weather across the region on Friday, Ransom said the games were moved up a day with the safety of players, coaches and fans in mind.
The National Weather Service is reporting that Sanford, which is where the games will be played, is currently under a winter storm watch. It will take effect at 7 p.m. Thursday and go through 7 a.m. Saturday.
Snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected, with ice accumulations of a light glaze also possible.
In Richmond County, the National Weather Service is calling for the possibility of heavy mixed precipitation during the same time frame. Snow and sleet accumulations up to four inches and ice accumulation of up to three tenths of an inch are possible.
The Lady Raiders (11-4, 5-0 SAC) took the driver’s seat in the Sandhills Athletic Conference standings with a pivotal win over rival Scotland Tuesday.
Looking to add another win, Richmond and head coach Teddy Moseley will face sixth-place Southern Lee (3-9, 1-5 SAC). The game will start at 6 p.m.
In varsity boys’ action, the Raiders (15-0, 5-0 SAC) will try to extend their historic start to the season and remain undefeated. Currently, Richmond holds a one-game lead over Union Pines in the standings.
Head coach Donald Pettigrew and the Raiders will play their game against the last-place Cavaliers (1-12, 0-5) starting at 7:30 p.m.
Also playing at Southern Lee on Thursday will be the junior varsity boys’ basketball team. The JV Raiders (7-4, 3-1 SAC) will get everything started at 4:30 p.m.
Richmond’s junior varsity girls’ team will not play since Southern Lee doesn’t have a team.
