CHARLOTTE — The energy and excitement was palpable Wednesday at Quail Hollow Club leading up to the Presidents Cup competition as United States and International team captains Davis Love II and Trevor Immelman, respectively, announced their first-round pairings to the press.
Tee times begin at 1:05 p.m. Thursday and will feature a four-ball competition with two United States players pitted against two International players — the low scorer of each hole taking a point for their respective team.
Each golfer will play his own ball and this format creates for some interesting strategy as teammates have the option on many holes to be aggressive or play more conservatively off both the tee and on approach shots.
The first match will feature Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele of the United States against Presidents Cup veterans Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama.
Other pairings are as follows, with US teams listed first:
- Match 2 – Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas vs. Sungjae Im and Corey Conners
- Match 3 – Cameron Young and Collin Morikawa vs. Tom Kim and K.H. Lee
- Match 4 – Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns vs. Si Woo Kim and Cam Davis
- Match 5 – Tony Finau and Max Homa vs. Taylor Pendrith and Mito Pereira
Thursday TV coverage will start on the Golf Channel at 12:30 p.m. Thursday if coming to check out the action in person is not an option.
