“SHUTTING OUT OPPONENTS” WITH QUANNA BOSTIC

The Richmond girls’ soccer team collected two Sandhills Athletic Conference wins and a non-conference victory last week. Bostic was a big part of those victories, securing two shutouts and allowing just one goal in 240 minutes played.

On Monday, the Lady Raiders defeated rival Scotland High School 5-0. Using five different goal scorers, Richmond and its defense didn’t allow many shots on goal by the Lady Scots.

Two nights later, Bostic’s best performance of the week came in a 1-0 shutout over Cape Fear High School. Throughout the match, Bostic made several sliding saves and stopped a corner kick and a free kick in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.

Bostic faced 14 shots in the win, and Richmond earned the victory thanks to a second-chance goal by freshman Jamyia Lindsey in the 67th minute.

Returning to conference play on Friday, Richmond edged Southern Lee High School 2-1. Scoring a goal in each half, tallies from Cheyenne Jacobs and Ellie Buck preserved the win.

Bostic allowed just one goal in the 35th minute, and made several saves in the second half to redeem an earlier loss to the Lady Cavaliers.

Through 15 matches this spring, Bostic has recorded four shutouts and is allowing just 2.27 goals per game. Richmond (8-7, 3-4 SAC) will travel to Pinecrest High School (7-3-2, 6-0 SAC) on Tuesday.

RAPID RESPONSES WITH QUANNA BOSTIC

ROSports: How have you acclimated yourself to the varsity level so quickly and what’s allowed you to be successful in the net?

Bostic: “It’s been challenging facing tough teams, but I just play the sport the way I know how and try to balance everything I’ve learned. I also have this attitude of not giving up, especially since the speed of the game is still pretty fast. But I’m getting more comfortable.

“I’ve been successful because of my coaches. Coach (Ashleigh) Buie in middle school really helped me and Coach (Chris) Larsen and Coach (Bennie) Howard really push me to do well. And even Coach (Teddy) Moseley from basketball season encourages me.”

ROSports: What are your thoughts on the defense that plays in front of you and how have they helped you this season?

Bostic: “The defense is great and I’m really proud of them. They have a lot of experience and know how to keep the ball away from the goal. Sometimes I’m still hesitant to come out of the net, but they make smart plays to clear the ball.

“Meghan (McKenzie), Kalei (Sriratanakoul) and Paxlee and Bobbie (Faircloth) have all really helped me with my confidence and my mental game. They’re really positive teammates.”

ROSports: Describe your playing style as a goalkeeper and what do you hope to continue to get better with this season?

Bostic: “I’d say I’m fearless because when I come out the box, I’m not scared. I go straight to the ball and want to make the stop every time.

“I want to continue to get better with my punts, not be as hesitant, and get better punching the ball out and be able to catch the ball on saves more consistently.”
