ROCKINGHAM — Richmond Senior High School’s baseball and boys’ tennis teams both suffered Sandhills Athletic Conference losses on Thursday.

Baseball drops SAC opener in resumed game with Southern Lee

The Raiders picked up in the bottom of the second inning on Thursday, resuming their game with Southern Lee High School that was postponed due to rain on Tuesday.

Trailing by eight runs with no outs to the Cavaliers, Richmond dropped its first game of the spring 14-1 in five innings.

Southern Lee had 11 hits in the win and added a run in the fourth and five runs in the fifth inning.

Richmond’s lone run was scored in the bottom of the fourth when junior Ethan Clayton belted a solo home run to straightaway center with one out. It was his first homer of the season.

Senior Cameron Way added a double, and senior Colin Wheeler and sophomore James Eason both added a single to round out Richmond’s four hits.

Head coach Rob Ransom said the Raiders will keep a short memory before playing the Cavaliers again on Friday.

“Tonight was disappointing for us, we just couldn’t get anything going,” Ransom said. “We made several mistakes in the field and our pitching wasn’t consistent. We walked people and everything (Southern Lee) hit seemed to find the gap.

“We had some good at-bats and hit the ball hard, but then we had some poor at-bats,” he added. “Hopefully we’ll regroup on Friday, that’s what we talked about after the game. We need to do a better job of staying inside of ourselves and not do too much.”

Note: The junior varsity baseball team did not play on Thursday. The JV Raiders will play the JV Cavs at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Raider tennis faces tough Union Pines team

On the road at Union Pines High School, the Richmond boys’ tennis team suffered a 9-0 loss to the Vikings.

Playing their singles matches in pro-sets, the Raiders struggled to score points against Union Pines. No. 5 senior Thomas Kvapil managed to score two points in his 2-8 loss to Jackson Carmichael.

No. 2 junior Matthew Burns and No. 4 freshman Jordan Jacobs both tallied one point against Luke O’Donnell and Aaron Scodius, respectively.

Burns and junior Ty Murray lost their No. 1 doubles match 4-8, while No. 2 Jacobs and Ethan McDonald, along with No. 3 Kvapil and Marcelo Cantu, lost their doubles matches 2-8.

Looking to re-enter the win column, Richmond (1-3, 1-3 SAC) resumes conference play with a home match against Lee County High School on Tuesday. The six singles matches will begin at 4 p.m.
