CHARLOTTE — The old adage of “it takes a village” is proving true for Richmond County in a statewide high school stadium contest.

The Charlotte Observer posted its “What is the best HS football stadium in North Carolina” poll earlier this week and Raider Nation has responded.

According to its website, the Charlotte Observer “consulted a group of longtime high school football experts to come up with a list of 23 N.C. football stadiums and we’re going to allow you all to vote to determine the winner.

“Only 22 schools will be included in the vote because one spot that consistently came up among the experts, Charlotte’s Memorial Stadium, is not a high school football stadium.”

At the time of publication, Richmond Senior High School’s Raider Stadium holds a commanding lead with 51% of the vote (677 total votes).

In a distant second place is Charlotte Catholic High School (26%, 342 votes), followed by South Rowan High School (6%, 77 votes).

The other remaining schools — AC Reynolds, A.L. Brown, Asheville, Brevard, Cherokee, East Burke, Franklin, Grimsley, Kings Mountain, Lincolnton, Mitchell, New Hanover, Providence Day, Randleman, Sanderson, Shelby, South Point, Swain County and Wake Forest — have 3% or less of the overall vote.

Currently, a total of 1,318 votes have been tallied since the start of the poll.

The Raider football program’s Facebook page joined the excitement on Thursday by posting the link and saying “RSHS made the list! Let’s make sure they win! All you need to do is vote. You can vote as many times as you’d like. Voting ends this Friday.”

Head principal Jim Butler, who also serves as the public address announcer for home games, shared the contest to the school’s Facebook page.

“Raider Fans! We already know that Raider Stadium on a Friday night is the best high school football experience in the state. Let’s win this Charlotte Observer BEST HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL STADIUM contest. Vote, Vote, Vote!” he wrote.
