ROCKINGHAM — Closing out regular-season play on Thursday, the Richmond Senior High School boys’ tennis team fell to Scotland.

Playing without top-seeded junior Ty Murray due to injury, the Raiders lost 6-3.

Splitting the season series with the Fighting Scots, Richmond won two singles matches and one of the three doubles matches.

Three of the singles matches went to tiebreakers, with just one going in the Raiders’ favor. No. 3 freshman Jordan Jacobs got that win, rallying to defeat Eli Hicks.

Jacobs dropped the first set 3-6, but roared back to win the second set 6-3 and force the extra set. In the tiebreaker, Jacobs took care of business 10-0.

Winning his singles match in straight sets was No. 4 senior Marcelo Cantu, who held off David Reyes. Set scores were 6-3 and 6-2.

No. 2 junior Ethan McDonald and No. 6 senior Han Jalbasuren both battled to tiebreaker sets but lost.

McDonald fell 4-6, 6-2 and 6-0 to Sammar Goraya and Jalbasuren dropped his match with Preston House by set scores of 6-3, 5-7 and 5-10.

Also coming up short in their singles match were No. 1 junior Matthew Burns and No. 5 senior Thomas Kvapil.

Needing to sweep the doubles matches to earn the win, the Raiders managed to only win the No. 2 pairing. Burns and Kvapil teamed up to cruise past House and Cole Hamilton 8-3.

McDonald and Jacobs lost 4-8 in the No. 1 doubles match and Cantu and Jalbasuren came up short 3-8 in the No. 3 pairing.

Finishing the regular season with a 5-7 overall record, the Raiders will compete in the Sandhills Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday.

Head coach Jessica Covington said the team seedings will be announced at the coaches meeting on Friday.

Following their performance in the SAC tournament, the Raiders will await the possibility of competing in regionals.
