LAURINBURG — The Richmond Senior High School boys’ tennis team returned to the win column in dominating fashion on Thursday.

Traveling to rival Scotland High School, the Raiders nearly blanked the Fighting Scots in an 8-1 win.

Richmond swept the singles competition with six victories to clinch the win, and added two wins in doubles play for their second team win of the spring.

Starting things off in the No. 1 singles match, junior Ty Murray held off Cole Hamilton by set scores of 6-4 and 6-4. Fellow No. 2 junior Matthew Burns edged his opponent Sammar Goraya 7-5 in the first set before closing the door with a 6-2 win in the second.

No. 3 junior Ethan McDonald and No. 4 freshman Jordan Jacobs both earned their team-leading third singles win of the season against the Fighting Scots.

Playing against Eli Hicks, McDonald cruised to the win with scores of 6-2 and 6-2. Jacobs defeated Ricky Zhang 6-4 and 6-1 to continue his impressive first varsity season.

Scotland’s lone win of the afternoon came in the No. 1 doubles match when Hamilton and Goraya defeated Murray and Burns 9-7.

Jacobs and Cantu played as a duo for the first time this spring and won the No. 2 doubles match 8-2 over Hicks and Zhang.

Also playing as partners for the first time were Kvapil and senior Han Jalbasuren, who rolled past House and English 8-1.

Richmond (2-3, 2-3 SAC) will look to add another win to the column with another conference match at home against Lee County on Monday. Singles play will start at 4 p.m.
