ROCKINGHAM — Prior to Thursday’s tennis match against Lumberton High School, the Raiders celebrated senior Kevin Campos’ commitment to play tennis at Thiel College in Pennsylvania.

Thursday also marked the final home match of the spring, as Richmond honored its four seniors: Mason Bailey, Caleb Brewer, Campos and Adam Morrison.

The visiting Pirates would take the match, however, cruising past the Raiders in 8-1 fashion. Picking up the lone win on the day was sophomore Bradford Pittman, who defeated Quinton Frederick 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 contest.

“Bradford had a good day, and pulled away halfway through his first set,” head coach Patrick Hope said. “He dominated in his second set.

“We recognized our seniors before the match began,” he added. “I’m proud of how far they’ve come in the two years I’ve coached them. They all had to adjust this season and did it with no issues.”

Campos, who will be a future Tomcat in the fall, fell to Joshua Britt 6-0, 6-3. Fellow seniors Brewer (No. 3) and Bailey (No. 4) lost to Mason Collins and Elijah Hammonds, respectively. Collins held on to win 6-2, 6-0, while Hammonds won 6-1, 6-4.

Rounding out the singles matches were No. 5 sophomore Karym Ojeda and No. 6 sophomore Alex Yates. Ojeda lost to Evan Ivey 6-0, 6-4, while Yates came up short against Caleb Benson 6-4, 6-0.

The doubles matches saw the Pirates sweep all three pairings, starting with Britt and Frederick teaming up to defeat Campos and Pittman 8-4 in the top seeded match. Brewer and Bailey fell to Collins and Hammonds 8-4 in the No. 2 match, while Yates and Morrison lost 8-4 to Benson and Trevor Cox.

The Raiders (4-8, 4-6 SAC) will now prepare for the Sandhills Athletic Conference tournament, which will begin on Tuesday, April 9. An opponent and location has yet to be determined at the time of this publication.
