Raiders roll past Bucks to complete season sweep

ROCKINGHAM — Returning to the win column on Tuesday, the Richmond boys’ tennis team completed the season sweep of Hoke County High School.

Rebounding from a loss against Pinecrest their last time out, the Raiders cruised past the Bucks 8-1.

Richmond secured the win by taking five of the six singles matches, and then swept all three doubles matches.

Playing the best of three sets, No. 1 junior Ty Murray started things off with a win over Juan Pena by scores of 6-1 and 6-4. 

In the No. 2 singles match, fellow junior Matthew Burns defeated Joseph Buel 6-2 and 6-3, and No. 3 junior Ethan McDonald made quick work against Colton Wright, blanking him 6-0 and 6-0.

Adding singles wins were No. 4 freshman Jordan Jacobs and No. 6 senior Thomas Kvapil. Jacobs held on for a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Armando Zuniga, and Kvapil recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win over Max Jose-Figueroa.

Hoke County (0-7) got its lone win of the day when John Perez edged senior Marcelo Cantu 6-4, 3-6 and 10-5 in a tiebreaker in the No. 5 singles contest.

All three of Richmond’s doubles matches ended in a final score of 8-5. Murray and Burns won against Pena and Buel in the No. 1 match.

McDonald and Jacobs knocked off Zuniga and Perez in the No. 2 pairing, and the No. 3 duo of Cantu and Kvapil picked up a win over Wright and Jose-Figueroa.

The Raiders (4-5) will have another home match on Wednesday against Union Pines High School (7-2). Singles matches will start at 4 p.m.
