ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School boys’ tennis team lost to Union Pines on Wednesday, but head coach Jessica Covington said she saw a lot of improvement from the Raiders.

Playing the Vikings for the second time this spring, the Raiders lost 7-2. Unlike the first time, Richmond managed to pick up two wins.

No. 6 senior Thomas Kvapil recorded the Raiders’ lone win in singles competition, cruising past Micah Wortham 8-1.

Kvapil paired up with fellow senior Marcelo Cantu in the No. 3 doubles match to help secure another point for Richmond. They defeated Wortham and Joey Tortora 8-4 in convincing fashion.

Several other matches were close for the Raiders, including the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles contests. In the top-seeded match, juniors Ty Murray and Matthew Burns fell 9-7 to Caleb Dunning and Philip Johnson.

The No. 2 duo of junior Ethan McDonald and freshman Jordan Jacobs also lost by two points, 8-6, to Aaron Scodius and Jack Carmichael.

In singles play, No. 4 Jacobs and No. 5 Cantu managed to score four points against their respective opponents despite falling short.

“The boys did really well today,” Covington said. “All of them showed a huge improvement from the first time we played them and I’m really proud of their effort.”

Richmond (4-6) was supposed to play a match at Lee County High School on Thursday, but it was postponed due to inclement weather.

The Raiders will now travel to play the Yellow Jackets on Friday. Play will begin at 4 p.m.
