Raiders split non-conference match at Asheboro

ASHEBORO — Fresh off two wins to open its season, the Richmond Senior High School wrestling team split its non-conference match on Friday.

Competing in a tri-match on the road at Asheboro High School, the Raiders fell to the host Blue Comets. Their other opponent, Chatham Central High School, was a no-show and forfeited the match.

Head coach Richard Kerekes noted the Asheboro squad was “really tough”. Richmond dropped its first match of the season in a 74-6 decision.

The Raiders suffered 13 losses in the 14 matches wrestled against the Blue Comets, losing eight of those by pinfall. Three were by forfeit and two Raiders fell by a major decision.

Picking up Richmond’s lone win was junior Andres Sanchez in the 120-pound match. Competing against Julio Ruiz, Sanchez pinned his opponent to collect six points for the Raiders.

Senior Kaden Walker faced off against Luke Lambeth in the 170-pound match, but fell 12-2 in a major decision. Also losing by a major decision was sophomore Jaxson Martin in the 126-pound pairing, falling 10-1 to Abraham Mora.

The Raiders (3-1, 1-0 Sandhills Athletic Conference) will return to conference play on Wednesday with another tri-match. Richmond will travel to Purnell Swett High School and wrestle against the Rams and Scotland High School.

Last week, the Raiders defeated the rival Scots 42-36 in their season-opening match. Action will get underway at 6 p.m.
