RAEFORD — The Richmond Raider tennis team collected its first win of the season on Tuesday.
The Raiders continued Sandhills Athletic Conference play and defeated Hoke County High School 9-0. Richmond swept play in the singles and doubles events.
Playing the best of three sets, junior No. 1 Ty Murray started things off with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Juan Pena Laverde. Fellow junior Matthew Burns also picked up a win in the No. 2 singles, defeating Joseph Buel 6-1, 6-3.
Those wins by Murray and Burns were their first respective singles wins of the season.
In the No. 3 singles match, junior Ethan McDonald rolled past Christian Trotta 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Jordan Jacobs held off Armando Zuniga 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles match.
Also collecting their first singles wins of the season were seniors Thomas Kvapil and Marcelo Cantu. Kvapil defeated Colton Wright 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 5 match, while Cantu cruised past Max Jose-Figueroa 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 contest.
The three doubles matches were played as pro-sets, seeing the first pair to reach eight points win.
Entering doubles play with the team win already secured, the No. 1 duo of Murray and Burns won their match 8-5.
No. 2 McDonald and Jacobs followed with an 8-2 win, and No. 3 Kvapil and Cantu defeated their opponents 8-2.
Richmond (1-2) will play another road SAC match at Union Pines High School on Thursday. Singles play will get underway at 4 p.m.
