Raiders take 3rd in opening indoor track and field meet

CAMERON — Opening its season on Saturday, the Richmond Senior High School boys’ indoor track and field team took third place.

The Raiders and head coach John Rich competed in the Polar Bear invitational at Union Pines High School. A total of eight teams, including three other Sandhills Athletic Conference programs, were in attendance.

Richmond registered 87.5 points, behind second-place Union Pines (135 points) and winner Pinecrest High School (205.5 points)

The Raiders had one first-place finish in the 13 different events they competed in — the 4×200-meter relay race.

Seniors Emoni McBride and Taye Spencer, junior Jaliel Green and freshman Chamaure Shaw passed the baton in 1:35.46. That time edged Pinecrest’s relay team, which clocked in at 1:35.67.

Richmond had three second-place finishes, one third-place mark and three more fourth-place performances.

The 4×400-meter relay team of junior Linden Garcia and sophomores Jordan Bostick, Nicholas Griggs and Travion Smith placed second with a time of 3:49.46.

Also taking second in the 55-meter hurdles was freshman Domonic Tillman (9.33 seconds), who was a little more than a second behind winner Nahjiir Seagraves (Pinecrest).

Fellow freshman Tyrene Stanback recorded a distance of 18 feet, 10.5 inches in the long jump. That was good enough for second, with Christian Hackett (Union Pines) taking the win with a distance of 20 feet, 1.5 inches.

The Raiders’ lone third-place finish came courtesy of Spencer in the 55-meter dash (6.86 seconds). Ahead of him were Raysean Hunter (6.61 seconds, Cape Fear) and Ethan Biggs (6.67 seconds, Union Pines).

Richmond’s three fourth-place finishes came in the 4×800-meter relay, 1000-meter run and the high jump. Stanback cleared the bar at 5 feet, 8 inches in the field event.

Freshman Cameron Gladden earned points with a time of 3:12.33 in the 1000-meter run. Gladden, along with teammates Jemell Bingham, James Coicou and Tristan Holloway paced their way to a 9:47.84 finish in the 4×800 race.

The Raiders will run in their second meet of the season next Saturday at Pinecrest High School.
