ROBBINS, N.C. — Richmond Senior’s wrestling team wrapped up its regular season on Thursday by splitting a non-conference tri-match.

The Raiders and head coach Richard Kerekes traveled to North Moore High School to take on the Mustangs and Union Pines High School.

Richmond handed North Moore a 48-12 loss, while the Raiders dropped their match to the Vikings 72-12.

“On Thursday, we wrestled really well,” Kerekes said. “There were a bunch of forfeits on both sides, but we won all three of the matchups versus North Moore.”

Richmond used five forfeit wins to get ahead of the Mustangs.

Those wins were awarded to freshman Aiden Rountree (113-pound), junior Andres Sanchez (120-pound), sophomore Christian Sanchez (132-pound), sophomore Louis Fernandez (152-pound) and sophomore Jadden King (160-pound).

Collecting Richmond’s three pinfall victories were sophomore Naaman Perakis (138-pound), senior Michael DeMay (145-pound) and senior Kaden Walker (182-pound).

Perakis pinned Alistair Fenberg, DeMay defeated Josue Peralta and Walker made quick work against Gage Baughman.

North Moore’s 12 points came on forfeits in the 195 and 285-pound matches.

Against Union Pines, it was Rountree and Andres Sanchez who picked up their second respective victories of the night for the Raiders’ 12 points.

Rountree (113-pound) continued his impressive freshman season by pinning Dustin Maness to the mat with 38 seconds left in the first two-minute period.

Andres Sanchez (120-pound) battled Kyle Gaines for nearly two rounds, before earning the pinfall win with 68 seconds remaining before the whistle.

The Vikings used six forfeits and six pins to rack up their 72 points.

With the shortened regular season in the books, Kerekes and assistant head coach Andre’ Ellerbe will begin shifting Richmond’s focus to preparing for the NCHSAA 4A Midwest Regional tournament.

Kerekes said he’s still waiting to hear which Raider wrestlers qualified for the Midwest Regional, which will be held at Glenn High School on June 15.

“We had a really tough season with some strong opponents and a very small team,” Kerekes noted. “I really believe that having this difficult schedule has prepared the team for the tough regional tournament ahead.

“I am very proud of the guys that stayed dedicated throughout this season and I look forward to seeing how they do going forward,” he closed.
