ROCKINGHAM — With the high school fall sports season set to officially get underway later this week, one final athletic summer camp is scheduled at Richmond Senior High School.

The Richmond tennis program will host its first camp with Jessica Covington as the head coach. Open to boys and girls, the camp will welcome interested players ages eight and up.

“We’re excited to host our first camp,” Covington said. “Tennis is a sport that is growing in our county, especially at the high school, and we want to give kids a chance to get involved.

“There aren’t any local youth programs so our camp will allow campers to experience the sport at a younger age,” she continued. “With our middle schools not having tennis teams either, it’s just another step in preparing players for the high school level.”

Richmond’s three-day camp will be held from Monday, Aug. 5, through Wednesday, Aug. 7, on the tennis courts at the high school. Each daily session will run from 9 a.m. until noon.

Covington said players of all skill levels are welcomed to sign up, and she encouraged beginners to take part in the camp. Tennis rackets will also be provided for those who do not have one.

The cost of camp is $75 per camper, and for families with two or more campers, the price will be $65 per camper. The cost includes a camp t-shirt.

Leading the camp’s instruction will be Tom Sweitzer of Legacy Lakes, a USPTA Master Pro. A recipient of numerous awards over his career, Sweitzer was named the National Tennis Pro of the Year.
