Richmond Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams Impress at Smithfield-Salem Invitational

SMITHFIELD, N.C. – Though cross country is a distance race that requires an incredible amount of physical and mental endurance, the Richmond Senior High School boys and girls cross country teams are sprinting down the home stretch of the season.

Both Raiders cross country teams were action Saturday, as they headed to Smithfield-Salem High School in Johnston County for the school’s invitational.

The Lady Raiders’ runners had a very strong showing in the 3.1-mile race, finishing second overall only behind Clayton High School (Johnston County) and received the runner-up trophy. Sophomore Ariel Brown continued her dominant season, finishing in third place. Teammates freshman Graceland Weatherford and senior Shelby Matheson finished in eighth and ninth place, respectively.

In the Raiders’ race, the boys also impressed, as they finished third overall. Only Cary High School (Wake County) and Clayton High School finished better. Senior Brandon Silva finished 10th overall, while junior Zachariah Hamilton finished in 13th, and sophomore Joseph Nicholson in ended the race in 18th place.

The top three runners in each race received medals.

Both Raiders cross country teams will be running again on Tuesday, October 10, at Pinecrest High School. The meet will serve as a pre-conference championship race.
