ROCKINGHAM — Fresh off its second-round playoff appearance last month, the Richmond Senior High School baseball program is getting ready for its summer schedule.

Returning over the next two months, the Richmond Renegades will play a summer slate aimed at developing the high school program.

The Renegades will compete in the Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League, which is designed to give local middle school and high school players a competitive edge leading into next school year.

This summer will be the second straight year the Renegades, formerly known as the Rattlers, will play following a one-year break because of the pandemic.

A season ago, the varsity team finished the summer campaign with a 7-3 record, winning its final seven games. The junior varsity team also had a winning record, going 9-4.

Richmond head baseball coach Rob Ransom and his host of assistant coaches will hold tryouts for this summer’s team on Wednesday, June 8.

The cost per player is $200, and is due prior to the first game on June 14. Players must complete the registration form before the tryout date.

Also helping coach this summer are Ty Bostic, Ryan Mercer and Corey Wallace.

Varsity players, those who will be entering the 11th or 12th grade, will tryout from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Raider baseball field.

The junior varsity team is open to interested players who are rising eighth, ninth and 10th graders. That tryout will be held from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

“This gives the players an opportunity to play during the summer,” Ransom said. “It allows the coaches to get to know the players and for the players to experience baseball at a high school level.

“It also gets our players accustomed to playing on larger fields, and most importantly, it builds team chemistry.”

Ransom said a finalized schedule will be released soon. The Richmond Observer will publish it when it’s made available.
