SANFORD — Starting Sandhills Athletic Conference play Tuesday, the Richmond Senior High School girls soccer team suffered its first loss of the spring.

Despite having “ample opportunities” to score, according to head coach Chris Larsen, the Lady Raiders fell 3-0 at Southern Lee High School.

The Lady Cavaliers (3-1, 1-0 SAC) scored all three of their goals off corner kicks. Richmond trailed 2-0 at halftime and allowed another goal in the final 40 minutes.

“We didn’t show up ready to play and allowed two quick goals,” Larsen explained. “After the first 15 minutes the girls decided to start playing our style of soccer. We created chances, knocked the ball around and had ample opportunities.

“We sent shots off the post on a long shot, and another off a header,” he continued. “We just couldn’t get that first goal that would break the ice and turn the tide. At one point, we had four straight corners and were just unlucky.

“It was a night of being so close to scoring, and it’s unfortunate we were unable to start conference play with a win,” he closed. “I told the girls that every game is important, so hopefully this will be an early eye opener for them and they won’t let it happen again.”

The Lady Raiders (2-1-2, 0-1 SAC) will host non-conference Whiteville High School (0-5) Wednesday. The varsity-only match will start at 6 p.m.
