ROCKINGHAM — A wet spring has delayed the pre-seasons of several Richmond Senior High School programs, but with a hopeful break in the weather this week, the Lady Raider softball and soccer teams will get their first taste of action in 2019.

Both programs saw their respective scrimmages washed away on Saturday, with softball supposed to play at North Davidson High School, and the soccer team competing in the “Kicking for Cancer” jamboree at South View High School.

The softball team also had its first scheduled scrimmages of the season at Southern Alamance High School canceled last week after several days of trying to reschedule were undone by rain.

Wallace, Lady Raiders squeezing in scrimmages ahead of opening day

Head softball coach Wendy Wallace and the Lady Raiders are scheduled to open their regular season on Thursday against Anson High School — and the Lady Raiders are hoping to see some live action ahead of that game.

Per Wallace and athletic director Ricky Young, the Lady Raiders will make their way to Lexington, N.C., to compete in two scrimmages Monday. It’s a makeup of the North Davidson scrimmage from the weekend, as Richmond will play the host Lady Black Knights and Southern Alamance.

Richmond will open against the Lady Patriots at 4:30 p.m., and the game will be played at Welcome Elementary School. Then it’ll head to North Davidson’s campus for its final scrimmage at 5:45 p.m.

First pitch against the Lady Bearcats in the regular season opener is set for 7 p.m. in Rockingham. ROSports will publish a season preview ahead of the opener.

Lady Raider soccer to host Southern Lee

Over the weekend, head coach Chris Larsen and the Lady Raider soccer team were scheduled to play three scrimmages at the Kicking for Cancer event. Instead, they’ll settle for a home scrimmage against Southern Lee High School on Tuesday.

Both the junior varsity and varsity teams will hit the pitch, starting with Tad Hamilton’s JV squad at 5:15 p.m. Larsen and the varsity girls are expected to start around 7 p.m.

Richmond’s regular season will start Friday at home, when it welcomes in Piedmont High School at 7 p.m. The Lady Raiders will also play Saturday against Cape Fear High School at Terry Sanford High School in the “Kickin’ It with the Crew” soccer showcase. That game is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Note: The Raider baseball team will not make up any of its scrimmages that were rained out over the weekend. Young, the team’s head coach, said the team’s three regular season games are expected to be played as scheduled.

The Raiders open their season on Wednesday at non-conference Anson High School (7 p.m.), before playing Laney High School at home Friday, March 1 (6 p.m.). Richmond will close its week Saturday by traveling to Ashley High School (1 p.m.).
