Richmond softball suffers first conference loss

CAMERON — A quiet night at the plate Friday resulted in the first Sandhills Athletic Conference loss of the season for the Richmond Senior High School softball team.

After starting with three straight wins against conference opponents, the Lady Raiders lost 10-0 on the road at Union Pines High School.

The Lady Raiders registered just four hits and the game ended in the sixth inning after the Lady Vikings scored their final three runs.

Collecting two of Richmond’s hits was senior infielder Ryelan Lyerly, both of which were singles. Adding a base knock apiece were junior Jakayla Steele and freshman Jorja Moore.

Union Pines (5-1, 3-1 SAC) scored three runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. The Lady Vikings also plated one run in the fifth.

Junior Maddie Pearson pitched for the Lady Raiders and allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on eight hits. She had four strikeouts.

As a team, Richmond stranded five base runners. Senior Addyson Hollingsworth drew a walk and Lyerly was also hit by a pitch. 

The Lady Raiders (4-2, 3-1 SAC) will host Lee County High School (1-4, 1-2 SAC) Tuesday at 6 p.m.

JV Lady Raiders lose first game

Also at Union Pines Friday, the Richmond junior varsity softball team suffered a 9-0 loss in five innings.

The JV Lady Raiders were no-hit in the loss. Reaching via a walk were Madeline Carriker and Macie King. Kinsie Lyerly, Kalynn McCormick and Kaylan Parsons were each hit by a pitch.

The JV Lady Raiders (3-1, 2-1 SAC) won’t play again until March 26 at Scotland High School.
