LAURINBURG — The Richmond Senior High School boys’ and girls’ swimming teams returned to competitive action for the first time in the new year last Wednesday at St. Andrews University.
Despite many swimmers on both teams not participating because of COVID-19 protocols, the Raiders and Lady Raiders managed to set some season-best times.
The boys collected 13 points and earned fifth place, while the girls tallied 15 points and finished in seventh place.
Sophomore Brent Humann and senior Wil Mabe were the two Raiders to tally points. Humann finished 12th in the 50-yard freestyle for three points in 32.05 seconds, which was also a new personal record for him.
Mabe competed in the 200-yard freestyle for the first time this season, completing the race in 2:40.57. That was good enough for fifth place and 10 points.
Also swimming in the 50-yard freestyle, but not placing, were senior Conner Ellis (33.54 seconds) and freshman Michael Barbee (38.30 seconds). Both of those times were personal bests.

The Lady Raiders were led by freshman Jamison Hubbard, who also swam the 200-yard individual freestyle for the first time in her career. She clocked in at 3:05.03, earning her 10 points and a fifth-place finish.
Senior Ellie Buck collected the final five points for the Lady Raiders, taking ninth place in the 50-yard freestyle. Her time in the race was 37.94 seconds.

Freshman Alivia Webb (40.01 seconds) and senior Keisten Gibson (40.26 seconds, personal best) also swam in the 50-yard free.
Richmond’s teams weren’t able to compete in the relays due to not having enough available swimmers.
The Sandhills Athletic Conference championship meet is scheduled for Wednesday at St. Andrews, starting at 6:15 p.m.
