MONROE — The Lady Raider volleyball team stepped out of conference play on Monday to play Sun Valley High School on the road.

A team that head coach Ashleigh Larsen called “well rounded,” the Lady Spartans defeated Richmond in straight sets, 3-0.

Set scores in the loss for the Lady Raiders were 10-25, 14-25 and 8-25. Richmond has now dropped three of its last four matches.

Larsen added that Sun Valley (4-2) “made very minimal mistakes” during the three sets, making it difficult for the Lady Raiders to find their footing.

Richmond (3-7, 2-2 SAC) will return home Tuesday for Senior Night against Sandhills Athletic Conference opponent Lee County High School (4-5, 1-2 SAC).

It will be the first time the two teams have met this season. During a preseason jamboree, Richmond and the Lady Yellow Jackets split their two sets.

The first of two home matches on consecutive nights to end the week, the Lady Raiders will honor seniors Saniah Durham, Kiersten Gibson and Allyiah Swiney. The match will begin around 6 p.m. following junior varsity action.

JV Lady Raiders fall to Sun Valley

Richmond’s junior varsity team also lost in straight sets, 0-2, to Sun Valley on Monday. Set scores were a little closer, with the Lady Raiders coming up short 20-25 and 19-25.

Now 4-6 in the season, the JV team will return to SAC action with a home match on Tuesday against Lee County. Play will begin at 5 p.m.
