HAMLET — Local wrestlers wanting to gain experience and knowledge of the sport will have the opportunity to do so later next month.

Returning for year three, the Richmond Senior High School wrestling program will hold its annual youth summer development camp in June.

Since taking over the high school’s wrestling program three years ago, head coach Andre’ Ellerbe has been adamant about building up the sport’s interest level and competitiveness amongst its younger audience within the county.

This summer’s five-day camp is set for June 17-21 and is open to students who are rising kindergarteners through eighth grade.

Ellerbe noted that it’s a “summer camp for beginner and experienced wrestlers,” and that all levels of experience will benefit from attending.

The cost is $40 per camper with each session running between 1:30 to 4 p.m. each day at the Richmond County Ninth Grade Academy.

Geared toward growing the community’s youth and middle school wrestling programs, both males and females can attend camp. The ultimate goal is to build a strong feeder program that will make Richmond successful.

Ellerbe said campers can expect to learn about and work on proper offensive and defensive techniques from the three positions in wrestling (top, bottom and neutral).

Participants will also learn how to be attack and defensive wrestlers, as well as other fundamentals. For the more experienced wrestlers, individual skill sets will be developed.

Current and former Richmond Raider wrestlers will be involved in the camp, serving as instructors and mentors.

The coaches, Ellerbe shared, will also encourage campers to continue working and training when the camp is over and during the fall sports season leading up to the winter campaign.
