Rockets defeat Cordova to improve to 5-0

CORDOVA — The Rockingham Middle School boys’ basketball team defeated cross-county opponent Cordova on Tuesday.

Making up the game that was postponed due to last week’s wintry weather, the Rockets cruised to a 54-20 win.

Ten total Rockets scored in the win, helping the team stay undefeated on the season with a 5-0 record. Jayden Hamilton’s 15 points were a game-high for Rockingham.

The Rockets used a 16-0 run in the first quarter to set the tempo, using 7 points from Hamilton. Chance Crowder, who ended the game with 8 points, scored his first six in the opening period.

Keonta Pegues knocked down a triple for his lone points of the game to round out the early scoring.

Another 16 points in the second quarter by Rockingham put the visitors up 32-4 at halftime. Joining the scoring for Rockingham was Keimore Crump, who hit two three-pointers for the first six of his eight points.

Hamilton scored two more points and teammate Brian Hinson knocked down the first four of his eight points in the game. Each adding a field goal before the break were Andrea Streeter and Kamari Liles.

Helping get the Cavaliers on the board was Yusan Harrison, who finished with a team-high 10 points. He netted a pair of field goals for four points in the second.

A 15-8 run by the Rockets extended their lead in the third quarter, led by the final six points from Hamilton. Liles added the final three of his five points, Hinson and Crowder netted a basket and Streeter and Domonic Tillman each had one free throw.

Donovan Jones, who finished with 8 points for the Cavs, drilled home a pair of triples in the third. Zymere Gillespie added his two points in the game with a field goal.

In the closing period, Crump, Hinson and Kerick Hairston each scored a basket for the Rockets and the final point came from Jaden Wall on a free throw.

For the Cavs, Harrison netted six fourth-quarter points and Jones added his final two points.
