LAURINBURG — Just like it has all season, the Rockingham Middle School golf team dominated the competition in last week’s Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference championship at Scotch Meadows Country Club.

The Rockets and head coach Wendy Rohleder put the finishing touches on a productive 2019 season by winning the team championship. Between the Rockets’ top four golfers, Rockingham posted a score of 411.

Playing 18 holes in the championship instead of the normal nine holes like regular-season matches, it was Rockingham eighth grader Trace Wallace who shot a tournament-low 85 (+13).

That mark was good enough to earn Wallace the title of “boys’ individual champion.” In the previous four regular-season matches, he also saw his name at the top of the leader board.

Helping the Rockets to the team championship win were fellow eighth graders Damon Bryant and Matthew Cockman, along with seventh grader Landon Summerlin. Bryant was second best on the team with a mark of 97 (+25), followed by Cockman (113, +41) and Summerlin (116, +44).

“My team has played exceptionally well all season,” Rohleder said. “We had three strong eighth grade boys on the team who constantly improved throughout the season. I am looking forward to next year, as I will have five returning players.”

Hamlet Middle School placed fifth in the championship, while Ellerbe Middle School took seventh. The Wildcats’ top four scorers were Camden Williams (125), Conner Williams (131), James Pack (142) and Jordan McCormick (142).

No individual scores for Hamlet or Cordova middle schools were reported. Coaches Allen Adeimy and Wendy Rohleder contributed to this article.
