ROCKINGHAM — The Rockingham baseball and softball teams were able to beat the rain Monday afternoon, making them the only Richmond County teams in action along with opponent Cordova Middle School.

Ellerbe Middle School had to postpone its games at Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference leader Carver Middle School, and rescheduled them for Wednesday, April 17. Hamlet Middle School doesn’t have a makeup date for its games against Sandy Grove Middle School.

Lady Rockets shutout Lady Cavaliers in three innings

Head coach Morgan Davis and her Lady Rockets made quick work against Cordova, holding them scoreless in a 16-0 rout in three innings. It was the first time Rockingham had played in a week.

Eighth grader Sydney Smith earned the win, no-hitting the Lady Cavs and allowing just one baserunner on an error. Of the 10 total batters she faced, Smith collected eight strikeouts.

Seventh grader Savanna Mullins went a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon, crushing two doubles and a single. Eighth grader Macy Steen followed up with a 2-for-3 performance, knocking a double and a single herself.

Ashton Alexander finished her game with a base hit in her two at-bats and drew a walk. The Lady Rockets improved to 5-1 and will battle rival Hamlet on Wednesday in a fight for second place behind Carver.

Rockets also blank Cavaliers in three innings

On the baseball diamond, the Rockets also took care of business against the Cavaliers, holding them scoreless in a 15-0 win. Starting pitcher Damon Bryant went the distance in the mercy-rule three-inning win, striking out seven batters in the process.

At the dish, Bryant also helped his cause with a 1-for-3 day. The leading hitter for the Rockets was Landon Taylor, who knocked a pair of singles in his two at-bats.

Adding hits in the win was sixth-grader Gray Maultsby and teammate Andrew Phifer, both of whom collected a base hit in their two at-bats.

The win moved Rockingham and head coach Jamie McDonald to 6-1 on the spring, and sets up a crucial home game Wednesday when the Rockets host Hamlet. Wednesday’s winner will take sole possession in the SEMSAC standings.

Both the softball and baseball games will begin at 4 p.m.
